Identity
The interactive and multisensory artwork is a profound exploration of the artist's identity. It features a box symbolizing the stereotypes associated with Asian Americans and encourages viewers to see beyond these superficial perceptions. To truly experience the piece, viewers must look through the holes in the cube, revealing the artist's inner world or true self.
This deeply personal art project reflects how the identity of being Asian American can feel singular and confined by stereotypes. Born in New York City, the artist moved to Korea at the age of seven and returned to New York as an adult. This journey has made their identity complex and often confusing.
The inspiration for this work comes from the artist's synesthesia—a phenomenon where one sense is experienced through another, blending them together. Inside the cube, there are five pieces representing the five senses: sight, smell, touch, taste, and sound. These senses coexist in a single, undivided space, allowing viewers to experience them simultaneously, mirroring how the artist perceives the world.
The artist's senses blend together, revealing a profound connection within. Distinctions fade as they experience every sense converging in unison, dissolving barriers and enabling a simultaneous appreciation of life and our shared existence. Through their art, they convey this unity, reflecting our oneness with the world around us.
To fully engage with the multisensory artwork, viewers are invited to tap into all six senses, including proprioception. They may lift the box to feel its presence, inhale the fragrance to see the colors, savor the tastes of the experience, touch the music they hear, feel the light they see, and touch the smooth texture of a flower in a vase that evokes emotions. By engaging our senses, we can deepen our bond with ourselves and those around us.
The artist invites viewers to explore this journey towards authenticity alongside them.
Presence
Presense draws its inspiration from ancient Korean ceramics, with surface decoration serving as a symbolic representation of movement—a recurring theme in my other artworks. This project aims to bridge the past and the future through movement, with Presense acting as the connector that ties it all together.
In this project, the artist aims to weave together the threads of history and future possibilities through dynamic expression. Presense stands as the crucial link that unites these elements, harmonizing the rich past with the boundless future. Through this convergence, she aspires to evoke a sense of continuity and transformation, celebrating the timeless dance of movement across time and space.
